English Translation of address by the President of India, Smt. Droupadi Murmu, at the reception hosted in honour of the Indian community in Romania

Date: 25 Jul 2026

It gives me immense pleasure to meet you all in Bucharest. This is my first visit to Romania. Whenever I travel abroad, I always look forward to meeting members of the Indian community residing there. Despite living away from India, you remain deeply connected to your motherland. Your achievements and your affection for India make every Indian proud.

Accompanying me on this visit are Smt. Nimuben Bambhaniya, Minister of State in the Government of India, and Members of Parliament Shri Vijay Baghel and Dr. Dinesh Sharma.

During the past two days of my visit, I have experienced first-hand the warmth and goodwill that Romania holds for India. In my meetings with President Dan and other leaders, I witnessed their clear commitment and enthusiasm to take our partnership to new heights. This has further strengthened my confidence in the bright future of India–Romania relations.

Today, cooperation between our two countries is broader and more dynamic than ever before. Our Governments are working together on global issues such as sustainable development, efforts to address climate change, cooperation in the fight against terrorism, and the promotion of a peaceful, rules-based international order.

The conclusion of the India–European Union Free Trade Agreement in January this year marks a historic achievement. Its early implementation will significantly expand trade relations with all Member States of the European Union, including Romania. A large business delegation from India has also accompanied me on this visit. During the India–Romania Business Forum, the delegation held highly productive discussions with the Romanian business community. There is immense potential for expanding economic cooperation in emerging sectors such as defence, renewable energy, digital technology, education, research, healthcare, science and technology, artificial intelligence, innovation, and advanced manufacturing.

I am delighted to see that Indian companies and Indian professionals are making a significant contribution to Romania's development while at the same time creating new avenues for cooperation between our two countries.

The strongest foundation of India–Romania relations is the close bond between our peoples. I am pleased to see that the Indian diaspora, united as one community, is keeping India's rich cultural heritage alive in Romania. A new generation of Indian IT engineers, scholars, researchers, healthcare professionals, and students is now making Romania its home.

Your contribution to Romania's economy and society, as well as your efforts to promote Indian culture and values in this country, make you true ambassadors of India. Through your hard work, talent, and dedication, you have achieved remarkable success. On this occasion, I would also like to express my gratitude to the Government and the people of Romania for welcoming the Indian community with warmth and ensuring its safety and well-being.

Dear friends,

I see many of our Romanian 'Friends of India' present in the audience. A warm welcome to you all. Your love for Indian art and culture, as well as your spiritual connections with India, form an important bridge bringing our people together. I thank you for your continued support in further strengthening the bonds of friendship and cooperation between our two nations.

India and Romania are both ancient civilizations with rich cultural traditions. Romania has given the world many outstanding artists, musicians, writers and philosophers. India has always cherished diversity, dialogue and the pursuit of knowledge. It is heartening to see Yoga, Ayurveda, Indian dance, music, cinema and cuisine gaining popularity in Romania.

Friends,

Today, India is advancing on the path of development with renewed confidence and determination. India is among the fastest-growing major economies in the world. Our country has made remarkable strides in areas such as digital technologies, innovation, renewable energy, infrastructure, healthcare, and start-ups, and this growth momentum continues to gather strength.

Our vision of 'Viksit Bharat 2047' is to build an India that is prosperous, modern, self-reliant, and inclusive. I urge each one of you to continue your active participation in this national journey of development. Wherever you may live in the world, your experience, expertise, and achievements strengthen India's progress and further reinforce our ties with countries across the globe.

The Government of India will always remain committed to your welfare and to maintaining strong bonds with every member of the Indian family across the world. Let us all continue to work together to further strengthen the India–Romania partnership, founded on trust, shared prosperity, and enduring friendship.

I wish you all good health, happiness, prosperity, and success. May the friendship between India and Romania continue to reach new heights.

Thank you!
Jai Hind!
